Trends 2018: Maximize to Minimize

The design heroes and thinkers who are making the circular economy the new normal

From turning factory dust into building materials to fabricating chairs out of flax, sustainability is vogue again, and the domain of some of the most influential leaders in the world, including Elon Musk, Stella McCartney, and Ikea. For this issue we gathered over a dozen makers who are committed to exploring the outer reaches of the circular economy, including EcoLogicStudio of London, designers of algae-based energy systems; and architect Kengo Kuma, whose preferred material is renewable wood. Studio Swine of London, whose ebonite rubber chair graces the cover, is devoted to exploring ecological alternatives to replace plastic, tortoise shell and other environmentally destructive materials.
