My review of the most culturally significant building to open in the United States in 2016. Designed by British architect Sir David Adjaye, the museum’s bronze-paneled exterior stands out dramatically among the surrounding Washington D.C. monuments that are mostly made of granite and marble. Inside, visitors traverse a provocative ascent through history, beginning with the origins of slavery five stories below street level.
