Featuring Carlo Ratti, and the golden sauna that helped an iron ore town with the emotional stress of mass relocation.
Traditionally, the September Issue is the most ambitious of the year, and a chance to weigh in on the big questions. We choose the urban environment with a cover story on architect/tech-geek Carlo Ratti, the mastermind behind MIT’s Senseable City, a laboratory exploring ways in which big data is transforming cities to better serve people and communities. “We have the advantage of using technology in our scientific work,” he explains, “to create an alternative universe.”
The issue also features Bigert+Bergström’s spectacular sauna shaped like a golden egg – a bedazzling image of rebirth for the iron ore town of Kiruna in Sweden, where the egg was installed to help citizens cope with moving to a new town due to mining expansion. Also, Chicago architect Jeanne Gang talks about building on the Highline and how her residential tower design encourages more human interaction.
